From: "Randy Foster"
To all my fellow aviators:
I received this news this morning for a close friend of John's. Thank you Juan for this moving letter.
We have lost another friend folks. May he rest in peace.
God bless you all.
John Jesse Dowds
ALL:
I have lost one of my dearest and closest friends: John J. Dowds. May God embrace and rest his soul. Sally and I offered our prayers for him during the last few weeks. I spoke with him briefly about two weeks ago. John J. Dowds was a true, honest, loyal, close and sincere friend to me ... and, I'm sure, to all of you whom he knew. I know that he lived a rich, exciting and full life. Sally and I will miss him very much. He knew Sally before I married her (that was over 50 years ago!).
John was the copilot and I was the navigator on Tim Holt's crew back in the mid 1950's in the 376th Air Refueling Squadron. We were together at Barksdale Air Force Base, LA, Ben Guerir AB, Morocco and at Goose Bay AB, Labrador. We kept in touch over the years ... not only at the 376th ARefS reunions but at numerous occasions when we would visit the Dallas/Ft. Worth area or when John -- on his many travels -- happened to be in our area. Most memorable was his special visit to Colorado Springs to attend my retirement party in 1995 and his attendance at the 376th ARefS Reunion that I sponsored in September 2004 in Colorado Springs, CO. Shirley Roberts accompanied him to the reunion. Often, he would stop by Colorado Springs and visit us on his many trips to musical events (he was an accomplished musician) or motorcycle or Volkswagen events (he dabbled -- and excelled -- in both these areas). Sometimes he would just be visiting friends all over the country (he had many!). We would have a few drinks, interesting and intense conversations and he would chastise me for still smoking after all these years. He repeatedly thanked me for standing up for him when we were crew members on the same flight crew. He also repeatedly told Sally how much I "pined" for her when we were at Ben Guerir. He remembered things I had long forgotten. John had an uncanny ability to recall detailed events that I -- and others -- had long forgotten.
He would always make one feel so close and personal.
Shirley, thank you for your timely -- though sad --- message. And thank you for standing by John as you have. You, too, are a good friend. Please pass this on to Carl and Paul, along with our sincere and heartfelt condolences. Please let me know when the service will be. Sally and I will be in Plano (Dallas) on May 28 for about four days.
We will miss John J. Dowds very, very much.
Juan G. and Sally S. Garcia

I just received a note from Mike Lovas and he writes: "In September Pat and I went to Nashville for a reunion and G/E convention. I didn't really feel good but not so bad as not to go. Upon our return I went to the hospital and had an abdominal hernia operation, got better and went to the Bay area for Christmas. Upon our return my health rapidly deteriorated so back to the hospital in January where after many tests, it was determined I had non-Hodgkins Lymphoma, and after further tests found it was complicated by stomach cancer. For a non smoker, non drinker this is very rare. It looks like the rest of the year will be taken up with treatment so I won't be seeing many friends until treatment is over."
I'm sure Mike and Pat would like to hear from all his friends and coworkers. The address is:
Michael G. Lovas (Patricia A.)
924 Windflower Way, San Diego, CA 92106-2974
Phone: 619-225-8214
E-mail: patandmike@cox.net
We shall all keep Mike and family in our thoughts and prayers.
Sincerely, Steve

This information is from me. Thanks for your inquiries and here is the story ……..
**************************************************************************
I have had some interest in Melanie’s health so I guess a quick update is in order. As you probably know, she had a Carcinoid tumor removed in October of 2004 and was left with some residual problems although no indication that the Carcinoid had spread or was still present. A monthly shot was helping control the other residual problems, sometimes more or less successfully. In December of last year (2005) she wound up in the hospital with a dramatically low platelet count. The bottom line on that was a diagnosis of ITP (Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura). More research and investigation on our part. The cause of this is unknown (thus the “Idiopathic”) but something has set her immune system off and it is coating her platelets in antibodies. They function normally but are being removed from her blood by her spleen. Her bone marrow is in fact producing “super platelets” which allows her blood to clot relatively well with even very low platelet counts so that is good news. We have tried high dose steroids and WinRho (used in mother/child RH blood incompatibility), all with very limited success that diminished after a short period of time. She is now receiving Rituxan once a week for a 4 week regimen. This drug is used extensively in chemotherapy but has also had some success in treating ITP. For the past two weeks her platelet count has remained relatively constant at about 91,000 (normal is about 220,000) so this is a really positive sign although way too early for any real optimism. She is tolerating the Rituxan infusions (we are in the hospital for about 6-7 hours for this) fairly well and we are two down and 2 to go for this go around.
Thanks to all of you that have inquired and thanks for your well wishes. I’ll keep you posted. GY

Subject: Jury Duty Scam
Please pass this on to everyone in your e-mail address book. It is spreading fast so be prepared should you get this call.
Most of us take those summons for jury duty seriously, but enough people skip out on their civic duty, that a new and ominous kind of scam has surfaced. Fall for it and your identity could be stolen, reports CBS.
In this con, someone calls pretending to be a court official who threateningly says a warrant has been issued for your arrest because you didn't show up for jury duty. The caller claims to be a jury coordinator.
If you protest that you never received a summons for jury duty, the scammer asks you for your Social Security number and date of birth so he or she can verify the information and cancel the arrest warrant. Sometimes they even ask for credit card numbers. Give out any of this information and bingo! Your identity just got stolen.
The scam has been reported so far in 11 states, including Oklahoma, Illinois, and Colorado.
This (scam) is particularly insidious because they use intimidation over the phone to try to bully people into giving information by pretending they're with the court system.
The FBI and the federal court system have issued nationwide alerts on their web sites, warning consumers about the fraud.

Subject: Fw: A WEEK AT THE GYM: ONE MAN'S STORY
This is dedicated to everyone who ever attempted to get into a regular workout routine.
For my sixty fifth birthday this year, my wife (the dear) purchased a week of personal training at the local health club for me. Although I am still in great shape since playing on my college football team 45 years
ago, I decided it would be a good idea to go ahead and give it a try.
I called the club and made my reservations with a personal trainer named Belinda, who identified herself as a 26-year-old aerobics instructor and model for athletic clothing and swim wear. My wife seemed pleased with
my enthusiasm to get started!
The club encouraged me to keep a diary to chart my progress . . .
Dear Diary:
MONDAY
Started my day at 6:00 a.m.
Tough to get out of bed, but found it was well worth it when I arrived at the health club to find Belinda waiting for me.
She is something of a Greek goddess - with blond hair, dancing eyes and dazzling white smile. Woo Hoo!!
Belinda gave me a tour and showed me the machines.
She took my pulse after five minutes on the treadmill.
She was alarmed that my pulse was so fast, but I attribute it to standing next to her in her Lycra aerobic outfit.
I enjoyed watching the skillful way in which she conducted her aerobics class after my workout today. Very inspiring!
Belinda was encouraging as I did my sit-ups, all though my gut was already aching from holding it in the whole time she was around.
This is going to be a FANTASTIC week!!
TUESDAY
I drank a whole pot of coffee, but I finally made it out the door.
Belinda made me lie on my back and push a heavy iron bar into the air. Then she put weights on it!
My legs were a little wobbly on the treadmill, but I made the full mile. Belinda's rewarding smile made it all worthwhile.
I feel GREAT!! It's a whole new life for me.
WEDNESDAY
The only way I can brush my teeth is by laying on the toothbrush on the counter and moving my mouth back and forth over it.
I believe I have a hernia in both pectorals. Driving was OK as long as I didn't try to steer or stop. I parked on top of a GEO in the club parking lot.
Belinda was impatient with me, insisting that my screams bothered other club members. Her voice is a little too perky for early in the morning and when she scolds, she gets this nasally whine that is VERY annoying.
My chest hurt when I got on the treadmill, so Belinda put me on the stair monster.
Why the hell would anyone invent a machine to simulate an activity rendered obsolete by elevators?
Belinda told me it would help me get in shape and enjoy life.
She said some other s**t too.
THURSDAY
Belinda was waiting for me with her vampire-like teeth exposed as her thin, cruel lips were pulled back in a full snarl.
I couldn't help being a half an hour late, it took me that long to tie my shoes. Belinda took me to work out with dumbbells.
When she was not looking, I ran and hid in the men's room.
She sent Lars to find me.
Then, as punishment, she put me on the rowing machine -- which I sank.
FRIDAY
I hate that bitch Belinda more than any human being has ever hated any other human being in the history of the world.
Stupid, skinny, anemic little cheerleader.
If there was a part of my body I could move without unbearable pain, I would beat her with it. Belinda wanted me to work on my triceps.
I don't have any triceps!
And if you don't want dents in the floor, don't hand me the F’n barbells or anything that weighs more than a sandwich.
The treadmill flung me off and I landed on a health and nutrition teacher.
Why couldn't it have been someone softer, like the drama coach or the choir director?
SATURDAY
Belinda left a message on my answering machine in her grating, shrilly voice wondering why I did not show up today.
Just hearing her made me want to smash the machine with my planner.
However, I lacked the strength to even use the TV remote and ended up catching eleven straight hours of the Weather Channel.
SUNDAY
I'm having the Church van pick me up for services today so I can go and thank GOD that this week is over.
I will also pray that next year my wife (the bitch) will choose a gift for me that is fun -- like a root canal or a vasectomy.
==================================================================
OK, I think that is enough. I hope you are all well and if you can, why not get out to the CT Luncheon this week. Spend a little time with your friends and while you do that, don’t forget …….. BE CAREFUL OUT THERE!!
Best regards, Gary
