News of the Day ......... 5/20/2006
Do you have trouble reading my e-mail? Do little squiggles or weird symbols appear instead of punctuation or highlights or colors? No I can’t tell you why but I know it happens. Not all e-mail programs are created equal so what to do? If you have WEB-TV, even more trouble. Some folks don’t even get my e-mails because of the length of the message. Nope, can’t tell you why. I have begun attaching a PDF version of the e-mail to my e-mail only to learn that some e-mail programs are stripping the attachment off or blocking the entire e-mail because it has an attachment. Security settings are set too high. So what’s a person to do?
I can give you a solution. You may have missed this information the first time but I now publish my “News of the Day” in an attempt to make it easier for those of you with viewing problems. Go to www.gybigguy.blogspot.com and check it out. Don’t worry, no virus there and no worries. Give it a try.
In the mean time, on with the news!

Have you gotten that message about the missing 13 year old Ashley Flores? Thought you might want to see this:
***************************************************
Origins: Most missing child alerts circulated via e-mail fall into one of two categories: genuine reports of missing children that continue to be forwarded long after the child has been found, or hoaxes imploring readers to look for children who aren't missing or don't exist. The above-quoted message bears all the hallmarks of the latter category.
The text of the e-mail (reproduced as we first received it in May 2006) does not include some of the most basic information one would expect to find in a genuine missing child plea: where the young girl (Ashley Flores) went missing, when she went missing, when and where she was last seen, a physical description of her, contact information for her parents, contact information for the local police authorities handling the case, etc. All we're provided with is the ambiguous statement that a "Deli manager from Philadelphia, Pa" has a 13-year-old daughter who has been missing "for two weeks," and even that information seems to have been tacked on to the message by someone other than its originator.
Meanwhile, the one piece of identifying information provided in the message, a yahoo.com e-mail address, produces a "no such user" error when mail is sent to it, and a variety of searches through news accounts and law enforcement and missing child web sites, including the site of the Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC), fails to turn up any mention of a missing girl named "Ashley Flores." And according to NBC-10 TV in Philadelphia:
The e-mail says: "Maybe if everyone passes this on, someone will see this child — We have a deli manager (Acme Markets) from Philadelphia, Pa., who has a 13-year-old daughter who has been missing for two weeks." Acme told Consumer Alert that people have been contacting them wanting to help, but they said the story isn't true. They said it is a sick joke.
In the event, it turned out that apparently Ashley Flores is a real girl, but her "missing" status was one concocted as a kids' prank. Last updated: 18 May 2006

From Russ Johns;
I'm sure that many of you have already received this notice, but didn't want to leave anyone out.
This is to inform you of Lesley Shaw's condition. Mon. or Tues, she went into surgery for a cancerous tumor on her spine. She got out of Intensive Care on Fri. She will be in hospital for some time, moving on to rehab after that. She has to have chemo and radiation when she is strong enough. Her family doesn't want visitors yet, nor cards sent to the hospital.
Her address is:
336 Elmwood Lane
Bloomingdale, IL

Hi Herb,
Sometimes it's so hard to read the "sad news". I noticed that you had a message on your Friday news about Lesley Shaw from Russ Johns. This is just a reminder of who she is .....
Lesley was in ORD crew schedule for a number of yrs. Her sister is Jennifer Moore who is an ORD flight attendant.
You might remember her if I tell you that while she was in crew schedule, she was one of a few females. She always greeted everyone with a big smile and was quick to help out with problems.
Lesley and Jennifer's Dad was a senior AA VP. There's a photo on the wall in ops of the girls when they were little with their Dad, circa late '40's. She is really a member of our dear ORD family. I remember how excited she was to get out of crew schedule and become a flight attendant.
Say a prayer for her as she has battled cancer for a long time.

(This one from Lesley's sister)
Dear All,
It has been two weeks since Lesley under went spinal chord surgery. I had an opportunity to leave messages, spoke with or had hopes of tackling an e-mail to tell you of this situation. I apologize to those who have not been advised until now. This has been the first opportunity for an e-mail.
To recap what did occur in Lesley's life, she took a tumble in the yard but was saved before she hit the ground. From this she incurred sore muscles. Then when the "pain" did not subside she had x-rays. They showed no broken bones. Next she saw the doctor again who requested an MRI which she had at 0600 the next day. From the time I drove her to the MRI and back to her house she had lost all strength in her legs. The doctor told us to return to the emergency room ASAP. Her doctor had read the MRI and had assembled a surgical team before our return.
The neuro surgeon had done her brain and the ortho guy was a partner of her hip surgeon.
We were told that the lung cancer had returned in the form of a tumor wrapped around her spinal chord. The 5 hour surgery removed part of the tumor which was applying pressure to the spine and the surgeons put a "cage" with screws and rods to stabilize her spine. This was accomplished on May 2nd. Since that time Lesley has been moved from SICU to an Ortho floor to a Rehab floor.
They have her "walking" with a walker. If she is in a sitting position or is "walking" she is wearing a brace fitted to her. This brace has a front which covers her chest, molded under her chin with foam on which her chin rests. The back covers her entire back, neck and up the back of her head. It is secured all over with Velcro straps. At this point in time we have not spoken with the doctors but the therapist feels she will be ready to come home May 26th.
She will still need Chemo and radiation. How "capable" she will be to live at home is uncertain. We have told them that she is living here with a 92+ year old Mom and that I do not reside with her. I have been living here with Mom since the surgery however.
We have said NO CALLS, NO FLOWERS and NO VISTORS. This because she falls asleep while thinking of what to say next (pain killers), cannot reach the phone with ease due to the surgery, the room is to small and no surface for flowers, and she tires very quickly even with Mom and I there.
I know she enjoys hearing of your well wishes which we pass on and cards sent to her house are given to her. I have hung them on the bulletin board in her room.
Please keep her in your prayers! Thank you all for your continued support.
Jennifer Moore (Lesley's sister )
Lesley's address:
336 Elmwood Lane
Bloomingdale IL. 60108
P.S. I know many of you have offered "physical" assistance. Believe me, we will be calling on you.
Thanks.
P.P.S. Feel free to let others know as I know I have missed many.

Subject: Passing of Dick Jacobson
My mother, Margaret Jacobson, asked me to notify The Grey Eagles that my father, retired Captain Donald A. "Dick" Jacobson (Grey Eagle #473) died Thursday night, May 11, 2006 in Los Altos. His death was the result of complications from pneumonia following a long illness.
Although arrangements are incomplete at this time, he will be taken back to Kansas for burial in his family's cemetery.
There will not be a local funeral service, but the family will have a memorial service in the Chapel at Pilgrim Haven Retirement Community, Los Altos, CA sometime in June. We will let you know as soon as a date has been chosen.
No flowers, please. In lieu of flowers my father requested that his friends consider making a contribution to The Grey Eagles Foundation.
My mother is currently working on an obituary for the local newspapers. When that is finished, she will e-mail a copy to you. She is also drafting a more detailed version for The Grey Eagles newsletter.
If you need more information, please feel free to contact either me or my mother at 650-941-3247.
I can also be reached by mobile at 817-676-3515.

JUST A TIME WHEN YOU DON'T HAVE A CAMERA
Marine Ground Crew Finds F-100 'SuperSabre' Had An Unbelievable Starting Option ………
The F-100 SuperSabre had a large chamber to accept a large gas-generating cartridge. When ignited by electrical current, the expanding gas from the black powder-like pyrotechnic cartridge drove a starter turbine which brought the engine up to a self-sustaining RPM via a drive system.
This eliminated the need for heavy and bulky ground starting units, but the starter cartridge spewed out a characteristic dense cloud of choking black smoke, which was often mistaken by inexperienced ground crews for an engine fire.
The powder charge for the ground start came in a big sealed can, and on opening and extracting the cartridge, you'd find two small metal tabs on the bottom of the cartridge. These tabs were the electrical contact that fired the cartridge when the pilot moved the throttle outboard on start, before bringing the throttle forward. As soon as a tiny RPM registered on the tach, you brought the throttle around the horn to feed fuel and engine ignition to the rapidly-building engine speed.
Sometimes the big metal receptacle that held the gas generator cartridge would get so dirty from repeated use that the metal tabs wouldn't make contact. Then the cartridge would refuse to fire, and the crew chief would give the starter receptacle a good healthy whack with a wooden wheel chock, usually curing the powder charge of any reluctance to detonate.
We'd often take a can containing a starter cartridge along with us as an alternative starting means on cross-country. Then- USAF Captain John Green flew his F-100 one day into the Marine Corps Air Station outside of Memphis one day, back in the early '70s. He was met by a couple of young Marine ground crewmen, who asked what kind of plane he was flying.
“F-100 'Supersabre'” only got him further puzzled looks. One of the ground crew said, " Sir, I don't think we have tech data on this bird. What do you need for start . . a huffer . . or just electrical"?
"Neither one," John replied with his tongue in his cheek. "If I can get, oh, about six of you guys to give me a push to start me rolling, I'll just 'pop the clutch' and get the engine started that way."
More and more doubtful looks, but, "Yessir," was the final comeback. What else would a young Marine say?
The 'Hun' was pretty finely balanced aircraft on the two main gear struts, so when you tapped the toe brakes, the nose strut compressed so much that the nose would dip, just like the hood of cars used to dip when being clutch-started after a similar push from young friends.
So, now six Marines are standing at the ready, still doubtful, but not about to question an officer on 'procedure'. "Just get me going at about a fast walk," John called down from the cockpit. "I'll wave you all clear when we're fast enough, pop the clutch on this baby, and be on my way. And thanks for the good turnaround! "
With six Marines pushing, they quickly get the bird up to a brisk-stepping speed. John waves his arms, and the Marines warily stand well clear.
The nose dips as John "pops the clutch" . . there is a huge cloud of choking black smoke as the starter cartridge goes off, the Hun's engine whines into life, and off goes Captain Green to the end of the runway, leaving six puzzled Marines in his wake!
=============================================
Hey. I don’t know if this story is true but I have seen the F-100 start like this and I have seen marines. Case rests!
I guess that is it for now so I’ll bug off and leave you alone. Thanks for listening and I hope this finds you in good health and good spirits. Take care of each other and remember ……. BE CAREFUL OUT THERE!!
Best regards, Gary
