I have collected a few items to pass on to you with some good information included. A couple of comments at the end so read on!
===============================================================================
I’ll start with some good news first involving a great place for a romantic get-away if you are so inclined. As you know Melanie and I don’t stray far from home right now for health reasons but we do try to get away from the house now and then for a couple of days. Our latest foray took us to a B&B about 30 minutes from here in beautiful Bucks County. It is called “The Inn at Bowman’s Hill” (http://www.theinnatbowmanshill.com/) and it is an extraordinary property. It has been written up in the Philadelphia Inquirer (newspaper) and most recently has now been written up in three well known city magazines: Philadelphia magazine, Westchester Magazine and the Washingtonian Magazine. The Westchester magazine has the best article and you can access and download it (PDF format) at http://www.westchestermagazine.com/ . The grounds are magnificent, the service from the hosts (Mike and Lynne Amery) is fabulous, breakfast was delicious AND it has been voted as one of the 10 most romantic inns in the nation by American Historic Inn’s. It is a 5 minute drive from New Hope and about 15 minutes from Peddlers Village in Lahaska, PA. Great restaurants and shopping so fun for all. We loved it and already have reservations to go back. This is a great getaway for 2, 3, 4 days or more. Check their web site for availability and rates (no, he is not a retired pilot so no airline discount!!) and let us know if you are coming. We have some recommendations for restaurants and sightseeing if you are not from the area.
===============================================================================
By now you have all seen the information I sent about Rene Cerasoli. I thought it would be a good idea to pass on Norms address in case you want to send a card:
Capt. Norm Cerasoli
109 S. Gladstone Ave.
Margate, NJ 08402
===============================================================================
A little information about Ed Staump. Ed went into the hospital about 8 days ago to repair/replace a heart valve that had been previously done about 8 years ago. During or immediately after the procedure, he suffered a stroke which appears to have had some effect on his speech and his left arm. Of course there may be some after effects from the anesthesia which may wear off over time. Ed’s daughter is a nurse and has been with him since he entered the hospital. Chuck Thomas has been the point of contact with her and he has spoken to Ed recently. Chuck feels Ed isn’t doing very well right now and has a little memory recall problem too. Anyway, he is still in the hospital although is due to come home soon. He can be reached at: 212-263-1849 which is a direct line to his room. Be patient with name recognition etc. Get well cards can be sent to his home at:
Ed Staump
23 Rainbow Hill Road
Flemington, NJ 08822
609-466-1553
===============================================================================
Hi Guys:
After several tests it has been determined that Frank needs a new Aortic Heart Valve. The adjustment is going to be challenging. She is to see two of the doctors on Tuesday afternoon with appointments with the others Wednesday and the following week. The "plan" for her treatment depends on the various tests she has had at the hospital.
I know she would love to hear from her friends but do not be offended if she concludes her conversation with you early. Her ability to talk is somewhat hampered by the brace as well as her stamina.
Regarding "visitors", I will let her determine this. Until the schedule for home therapists and she has acclimated to her limitations. This first week or so may be too much for her. I ask that you call first and she can let you know.
The cards which have been sent have brought smiles and tears. There is no way I can tell you how much they have meant to Lesley.
Thank you.
Please continue to keep her in your prayers.
Bless you all.
Jennifer
===============================================================================
From Russ Johns -------
After returning from long Memorial Day weekend, found this msg. in my e-mail & wanted to pass it on.
Subject:
F/A Sue Johnson
Good Morning. Anyway, he is still in the hospital although is due to come home soon. He can be reached at: 212-263-1849 which is a direct line to his room.

Jennifer
=====================================
From Russ Johns -------
After returning from long Memorial Day weekend, found this msg. in my e-mail & wanted to pass it on.
Subject:
F/A Sue Johnson
Good Morning. McKellar
RDU Area Coordinator
=============================================
Have you gotten that message about the missing 13 year old Ashley Flores? Thought you might want to see this:
***************************************************
Origins: Most missing child alerts circulated via e-mail fall into one of two categories: genuine reports of missing children that continue to be forwarded long after the child has been found, or hoaxes imploring readers to look for children who aren't missing or don't exist. The above-quoted message bears all the hallmarks of the latter category.
The text of the e-mail (reproduced as we first received it in May 2006) does not include some of the most basic information one would expect to find in a genuine missing child plea: where the young girl (Ashley Flores) went missing, when she went missing, when and where she was last seen, a physical description of her, contact information for her parents, contact information for the local police authorities handling the case, etc. All we're provided with is the ambiguous statement that a "Deli manager from Philadelphia, Pa" has a 13-year-old daughter who has been missing "for two weeks," and even that information seems to have been tacked on to the message by someone other than its originator.
Meanwhile, the one piece of identifying information provided in the message, a yahoo.com e-mail address, produces a "no such user" error when mail is sent to it, and a variety of searches through news accounts and law enforcement and missing child web sites, including the site of the Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC), fails to turn up any mention of a missing girl named "Ashley Flores." And according to NBC-10 TV in Philadelphia:
The e-mail says: "Maybe if everyone passes this on, someone will see this child — We have a deli manager (Acme Markets) from Philadelphia, Pa., who has a 13-year-old daughter who has been missing for two weeks." Acme told Consumer Alert that people have been contacting them wanting to help, but they said the story isn't true. They said it is a sick joke.
In the event, it turned out that apparently Ashley Flores is a real girl, but her "missing" status was one concocted as a kids' prank. Mon. or Tues, she went into surgery for a cancerous tumor on her spine. She got out of Intensive Care on Fri. She will be in hospital for some time, moving on to rehab after that. She has to have chemo and radiation when she is strong enough. Her family doesn't want visitors yet, nor cards sent to the hospital.
Her address is:
336 Elmwood Lane
Bloomingdale, IL
60108
Let's keep Les in our prayers.
Russ
***************************************************
From: "Barbara Scheiber"
Hi Herb,
Sometimes it's so hard to read the "sad news". I noticed that you had a message on your Friday news about Lesley Shaw from Russ Johns. This is just a reminder of who she is .....
Lesley was in ORD crew schedule for a number of yrs. Her sister is Jennifer Moore who is an ORD flight attendant.
You might remember her if I tell you that while she was in crew schedule, she was one of a few females. She always greeted everyone with a big smile and was quick to help out with problems.
Lesley and Jennifer's Dad was a senior AA VP. There's a photo on the wall in ops of the girls when they were little with their Dad, circa late '40's. She is really a member of our dear ORD family. I remember how excited she was to get out of crew schedule and become a flight attendant.
Say a prayer for her as she has battled cancer for a long time.
Barb Scheiber
***************************************************
(This one from Lesley's sister)
Dear All,
It has been two weeks since Lesley under went spinal chord surgery. I had an opportunity to leave messages, spoke with or had hopes of tackling an e-mail to tell you of this situation. I apologize to those who have not been advised until now. This has been the first opportunity for an e-mail.
To recap what did occur in Lesley's life, she took a tumble in the yard but was saved before she hit the ground. From this she incurred sore muscles. Then when the "pain" did not subside she had x-rays. They showed no broken bones. Next she saw the doctor again who requested an MRI which she had at 0600 the next day. From the time I drove her to the MRI and back to her house she had lost all strength in her legs. The doctor told us to return to the emergency room ASAP. Her doctor had read the MRI and had assembled a surgical team before our return.
The neuro surgeon had done her brain and the ortho guy was a partner of her hip surgeon.
We were told that the lung cancer had returned in the form of a tumor wrapped around her spinal chord. The 5 hour surgery removed part of the tumor which was applying pressure to the spine and the surgeons put a "cage" with screws and rods to stabilize her spine. This was accomplished on May 2nd. Since that time Lesley has been moved from SICU to an Ortho floor to a Rehab floor.
They have her "walking" with a walker. If she is in a sitting position or is "walking" she is wearing a brace fitted to her. This brace has a front which covers her chest, molded under her chin with foam on which her chin rests. The back covers her entire back, neck and up the back of her head. It is secured all over with Velcro straps. At this point in time we have not spoken with the doctors but the therapist feels she will be ready to come home May 26th.
She will still need Chemo and radiation. How "capable" she will be to live at home is uncertain. We have told them that she is living here with a 92+ year old Mom and that I do not reside with her. I have been living here with Mom since the surgery however.
We have said NO CALLS, NO FLOWERS and NO VISTORS. This because she falls asleep while thinking of what to say next (pain killers), cannot reach the phone with ease due to the surgery, the room is to small and no surface for flowers, and she tires very quickly even with Mom and I there.
I know she enjoys hearing of your well wishes which we pass on and cards sent to her house are given to her. I have hung them on the bulletin board in her room.
Please keep her in your prayers! Thank you all for your continued support.
Jennifer Moore (Lesley's sister )
Lesley's address:
336 Elmwood Lane
Bloomingdale IL. 60108
P.S. I know many of you have offered "physical" assistance. Believe me, we will be calling on you.
Thanks.
P.P.S. When ignited by electrical current, the expanding gas from the black powder-like pyrotechnic cartridge drove a starter turbine which brought the engine up to a self-sustaining RPM via a drive system.
This eliminated the need for heavy and bulky ground starting units, but the starter cartridge spewed out a characteristic dense cloud of choking black smoke, which was often mistaken by inexperienced ground crews for an engine fire.
The powder charge for the ground start came in a big sealed can, and on opening and extracting the cartridge, you'd find two small metal tabs on the bottom of the cartridge. These tabs were the electrical contact that fired the cartridge when the pilot moved the throttle outboard on start, before bringing the throttle forward. As soon as a tiny RPM registered on the tach, you brought the throttle around the horn to feed fuel and engine ignition to the rapidly-building engine speed.
Sometimes the big metal receptacle that held the gas generator cartridge would get so dirty from repeated use that the metal tabs wouldn't make contact. Then the cartridge would refuse to fire, and the crew chief would give the starter receptacle a good healthy whack with a wooden wheel chock, usually curing the powder charge of any reluctance to detonate.
We'd often take a can containing a starter cartridge along with us as an alternative starting means on cross-country. Then- USAF Captain John Green flew his F-100 one day into the Marine Corps Air Station outside of Memphis one day, back in the early '70s. He was met by a couple of young Marine ground crewmen, who asked what kind of plane he was flying.
“F-100 'Supersabre'” only got him further puzzled looks. One of the ground crew said, " Sir, I don't think we have tech data on this bird. What do you need for start . . a huffer . . or just electrical"?
"Neither one," John replied with his tongue in his cheek. "If I can get, oh, about six of you guys to give me a push to start me rolling, I'll just 'pop the clutch' and get the engine started that way."
More and more doubtful looks, but, "Yessir," was the final comeback. What else would a young Marine say?
The 'Hun' was pretty finely balanced aircraft on the two main gear struts, so when you tapped the toe brakes, the nose strut compressed so much that the nose would dip, just like the hood of cars used to dip when being clutch-started after a similar push from young friends.
So, now six Marines are standing at the ready, still doubtful, but not about to question an officer on 'procedure'. "Just get me going at about a fast walk," John called down from the cockpit. "I'll wave you all clear when we're fast enough, pop the clutch on this baby, and be on my way. And thanks for the good turnaround! "
With six Marines pushing, they quickly get the bird up to a brisk-stepping speed. John waves his arms, and the Marines warily stand well clear.
The nose dips as John "pops the clutch" . . there is a huge cloud of choking black smoke as the starter cartridge goes off, the Hun's engine whines into life, and off goes Captain Green to the end of the runway, leaving six puzzled Marines in his wake!
=============================================
Hey. Attempts to clear the problems by cycling the canopy failed. The final cycling of the canopy resulted in it being in the down and locked position. The canopy would not cycle up from this position trapping the pilot in the cockpit.

Attempts to manually open the canopy were unsuccessful. 27th AMU consulted Lockheed Martin and the F-22A System Program Office to determine alternate methods to open the canopy and extract the pilot. After all maintenance options were exhausted, the canopy was cut by fire department personnel and the pilot was extracted at approximately 1315.

Trouble-shooting of the aircraft is in work. U.S. and Australian Defense Science Technology Organization officials evaluated UAV performance and future military potential during 11 sorties in the land-sea environment before it flew home to Edwards AFB, six weeks later.In March 2001, Global Hawk entered the Engineering, Manufacturing and Development phase of defense acquisition. Global Hawk is currently deployed supporting Operation Enduring FreedomGlobal Hawk, which has a wingspan of 116 feet (35.3 meters) and is 44 feet (13.4 meters) long, can range as far as 12,000 nautical miles, at altitudes up to 65,000 feet (19,812 meters), flying at speeds approaching 340 knots (about 400 mph) for as long as 35 hours. During a typical mission, the aircraft can fly 1,200 miles to an area of interest and remain on station for 24 hours. Its cloud-penetrating, Synthetic Aperture Radar/Ground Moving Target Indicator, electro-optical and infrared sensors can image an area the size of Illinois (40,000 nautical square miles) in just 24 hours. Through satellite and ground systems, the imagery can be relayed in near-real-time to battlefield commanders.When fully-fueled for flight, Global Hawk weighs approximately 25,600 pounds (11,612 kilograms). More than half the UAV's components are constructed of lightweight, high-strength composite materials, including its wings, wing fairings, empennage, engine cover, engine intake and three radomes. Its main fuselage is standard aluminum, semi-monocoque construction.

A pic of the Global Hawk UAV that returned from the war zone on Monday under its own power. (Iraq to Edwards AFB in CA) - Not transported via C5 or C17..... Notice the mission paintings on the fuselage. It's actually over 250 missions.... (and I would suppose 25 air medals).

That's a long way for a remotely-piloted aircraft. Think of the technology (and the required quality of the data link to fly it remotely). Not only that but the pilot controlled it from a nice warm control panel at Edwards AFB.

============================================================ Date: Tue, 9 May 2006 20:29:39 +0000
***************************************************
LGA PILOT
REMAINS IN FINAL FOUR
ON SURVIVOR
***************************************************
LGA BASED PILOT TERRY DEITZ STILL REMAINS AS ONE OF THE FOUR CONSTESTANTS ON SURVIVOR PANAMA-EXILE ISLAND. Thank you Juan for this moving letter.
We have lost another friend folks. May he rest in peace.
God bless you all.

John Jesse Dowds

ALL:

I have lost one of my dearest and closest friends: John J. Dowds. May God embrace and rest his soul. Sally and I offered our prayers for him during the last few weeks. I spoke with him briefly about two weeks ago. John J. Dowds was a true, honest, loyal, close and sincere friend to me ... and, I'm sure, to all of you whom he knew. I know that he lived a rich, exciting and full life. Sally and I will miss him very much. He knew Sally before I married her (that was over 50 years ago!).

John was the copilot and I was the navigator on Tim Holt's crew back in the mid 1950's in the 376th Air Refueling Squadron. We were together at Barksdale Air Force Base, LA, Ben Guerir AB, Morocco and at Goose Bay AB, Labrador. We kept in touch over the years ... not only at the 376th ARefS reunions but at numerous occasions when we would visit the Dallas/Ft. Worth area or when John -- on his many travels -- happened to be in our area. Most memorable was his special visit to Colorado Springs to attend my retirement party in 1995 and his attendance at the 376th ARefS Reunion that I sponsored in September 2004 in Colorado Springs, CO. Shirley Roberts accompanied him to the reunion. Often, he would stop by Colorado Springs and visit us on his many trips to musical events (he was an accomplished musician) or motorcycle or Volkswagen events (he dabbled -- and excelled -- in both these areas). Sometimes he would just be visiting friends all over the country (he had many!). We would have a few drinks, interesting and intense conversations and he would chastise me for still smoking after all these years. He repeatedly thanked me for standing up for him when we were crew members on the same flight crew. He also repeatedly told Sally how much I "pined" for her when we were at Ben Guerir. He remembered things I had long forgotten. John had an uncanny ability to recall detailed events that I -- and others -- had long forgotten.
He would always make one feel so close and personal.
Shirley, thank you for your timely -- though sad --- message. And thank you for standing by John as you have. You, too, are a good friend. Please pass this on to Carl and Paul, along with our sincere and heartfelt condolences. Please let me know when the service will be. Sally and I will be in Plano (Dallas) on May 28 for about four days.

We will miss John J. Upon our return my health rapidly deteriorated so back to the hospital in January where after many tests, it was determined I had non-Hodgkins Lymphoma, and after further tests found it was complicated by stomach cancer. For a non smoker, non drinker this is very rare. It looks like the rest of the year will be taken up with treatment so I won't be seeing many friends until treatment is over."
I'm sure Mike and Pat would like to hear from all his friends and coworkers. Thanks for your inquiries and here is the story ……..
**************************************************************************
I have had some interest in Melanie’s health so I guess a quick update is in order. As you probably know, she had a Carcinoid tumor removed in October of 2004 and was left with some residual problems although no indication that the Carcinoid had spread or was still present. A monthly shot was helping control the other residual problems, sometimes more or less successfully. In December of last year (2005) she wound up in the hospital with a dramatically low platelet count. The bottom line on that was a diagnosis of ITP (Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura). More research and investigation on our part. The cause of this is unknown (thus the “Idiopathic”) but something has set her immune system off and it is coating her platelets in antibodies. They function normally but are being removed from her blood by her spleen. Her bone marrow is in fact producing “super platelets” which allows her blood to clot relatively well with even very low platelet counts so that is good news. We have tried high dose steroids and WinRho (used in mother/child RH blood incompatibility), all with very limited success that diminished after a short period of time. She is now receiving Rituxan once a week for a 4 week regimen. This drug is used extensively in chemotherapy but has also had some success in treating ITP. For the past two weeks her platelet count has remained relatively constant at about 91,000 (normal is about 220,000) so this is a really positive sign although way too early for any real optimism. She is tolerating the Rituxan infusions (we are in the hospital for about 6-7 hours for this) fairly well and we are two down and 2 to go for this go around.
Thanks to all of you that have inquired and thanks for your well wishes. I’ll keep you posted. It is spreading fast so be prepared should you get this call.
Most of us take those summons for jury duty seriously, but enough people skip out on their civic duty, that a new and ominous kind of scam has surfaced. Fall for it and your identity could be stolen, reports CBS.

In this con, someone calls pretending to be a court official who threateningly says a warrant has been issued for your arrest because you didn't show up for jury duty. The caller claims to be a jury coordinator.

If you protest that you never received a summons for jury duty, the scammer asks you for your Social Security number and date of birth so he or she can verify the information and cancel the arrest warrant. Sometimes they even ask for credit card numbers. Give out any of this information and bingo! Your identity just got stolen.

The scam has been reported so far in 11 states, including Oklahoma, Illinois, and Colorado.

This (scam) is particularly insidious because they use intimidation over the phone to try to bully people into giving information by pretending they're with the court system.

The FBI and the federal court system have issued nationwide alerts on their web sites, warning consumers about the fraud.

Check it out here:
http://www.snopes.com/crime/fraud/juryduty.asp
==================================================================
Subject: Fw: A WEEK AT THE GYM: ONE MAN'S STORY

This is dedicated to everyone who ever attempted to get into a regular workout routine.

For my sixty fifth birthday this year, my wife (the dear) purchased a week of personal training at the local health club for me. Although I am still in great shape since playing on my college football team 45 years
ago, I decided it would be a good idea to go ahead and give it a try.

I called the club and made my reservations with a personal trainer named Belinda, who identified herself as a 26-year-old aerobics instructor and model for athletic clothing and swim wear. My wife seemed pleased with
my enthusiasm to get started!

The club encouraged me to keep a diary to chart my progress . . .
Dear Diary:

MONDAY
Started my day at 6:00 a.m.
Tough to get out of bed, but found it was well worth it when I arrived at the health club to find Belinda waiting for me.
She is something of a Greek goddess - with blond hair, dancing eyes and dazzling white smile. Woo Hoo!!
Belinda gave me a tour and showed me the machines.
She took my pulse after five minutes on the treadmill.
She was alarmed that my pulse was so fast, but I attribute it to standing next to her in her Lycra aerobic outfit.
I enjoyed watching the skillful way in which she conducted her aerobics class after my workout today. Very inspiring!
Belinda was encouraging as I did my sit-ups, all though my gut was already aching from holding it in the whole time she was around.
This is going to be a FANTASTIC week!!

TUESDAY
I drank a whole pot of coffee, but I finally made it out the door.
Belinda made me lie on my back and push a heavy iron bar into the air. Then she put weights on it!
My legs were a little wobbly on the treadmill, but I made the full mile. Belinda's rewarding smile made it all worthwhile.
I feel GREAT!! It's a whole new life for me.

WEDNESDAY
The only way I can brush my teeth is by laying on the toothbrush on the counter and moving my mouth back and forth over it.
I believe I have a hernia in both pectorals. Driving was OK as long as I didn't try to steer or stop. I parked on top of a GEO in the club parking lot.
Belinda was impatient with me, insisting that my screams bothered other club members. Her voice is a little too perky for early in the morning and when she scolds, she gets this nasally whine that is VERY annoying.
My chest hurt when I got on the treadmill, so Belinda put me on the stair monster.
Why the hell would anyone invent a machine to simulate an activity rendered obsolete by elevators?
Belinda told me it would help me get in shape and enjoy life.
She said some other s**t too.

THURSDAY
Belinda was waiting for me with her vampire-like teeth exposed as her thin, cruel lips were pulled back in a full snarl.
I couldn't help being a half an hour late, it took me that long to tie my shoes. Belinda took me to work out with dumbbells.
When she was not looking, I ran and hid in the men's room.
She sent Lars to find me.
Then, as punishment, she put me on the rowing machine -- which I sank.

FRIDAY
I hate that bitch Belinda more than any human being has ever hated any other human being in the history of the world.
Stupid, skinny, anemic little cheerleader.
If there was a part of my body I could move without unbearable pain, I would beat her with it. Belinda wanted me to work on my triceps.
I don't have any triceps!
And if you don't want dents in the floor, don't hand me the F’n barbells or anything that weighs more than a sandwich.
The treadmill flung me off and I landed on a health and nutrition teacher.
Why couldn't it have been someone softer, like the drama coach or the choir director?

SATURDAY
Belinda left a message on my answering machine in her grating, shrilly voice wondering why I did not show up today.
Just hearing her made me want to smash the machine with my planner.
However, I lacked the strength to even use the TV remote and ended up catching eleven straight hours of the Weather Channel.

SUNDAY
I'm having the Church van pick me up for services today so I can go and thank GOD that this week is over.
I will also pray that next year my wife (the bitch) will choose a gift for me that is fun -- like a root canal or a vasectomy.
==================================================================
OK, I think that is enough. I hope you are all well and if you can, why not get out to the CT Luncheon this week. Spend a little time with your friends and while you do that, don’t forget …….. BE CAREFUL OUT THERE!!

Best regards, Gary
